Sturgis Rally Field Intelligence Database Implemented Today at South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation

Friday, July 31, 2009.

The Sturgis Rally Field Intelligence Database (SRFID), a web application designed by Zuercher Technologies for the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, was put into use today. Implemented in preparation for the 69th Annual Sturgis Rally, SRFID will enable law enforcement personnel to easily gather and share intelligence about outlaw motorcycle gang members who attend the rally.

Historically, when outlaw motorcycle gang members were identified at the rally, law enforcement personnel filled out printed field identification (FI) cards by hand. This information was compiled into a rally report that was not available until after the close of the event.

With the new SRFID application, users from many different agencies can enter FI data and pictures into the database during the rally. Law enforcement personnel nationwide can use SRFID to view this intelligence data shortly after it is entered -- while the rally is still going on. They can also submit requests to be automatically alerted if a given outlaw motorcycle gang member is identified at the rally.

"SRFID will make it easier and faster to collect outlaw motorcycle gang data at the Sturgis Rally,” said South Dakota DCI Director Bryan Gortmaker. "And that data will be so much more useful now that SRFID makes it available in real time.”

The application is designed for easy searching of the intelligence data gathered at the rally. In fact, the database already contains years of valuable data converted from the handwritten FI cards.

"We expect that as this application is used at this year’s rally and each year following, SRFID will become an extremely useful repository for outlaw motorcycle gang intelligence data,” said Michael Zuercher, president of Zuercher Technologies.
