Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office in southeast Louisiana is lowering severe crime and traffic accident rates by analyzing data to guide personnel deployment. The agency is one of seven demonstration sites nationwide for an emerging model of policing called Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS). The DDACTS model is straightforward: map the times and places where serious crimes and major traffic accidents occur, look for overlap to identify hot spots, and direct deployment of law enforcement personnel toward those areas.
According to a May 14 article in Government Technology magazine ("Crime and Traffic Safety Data Help Public Safety Agencies Reduce Serious Crashes and Crimes”), Lafourche Parish saw significant results when they kicked off their DDACTS program last year. Severe traffic accidents, for example, dropped from a previous annual average of 24 to just 10 in 2009, and major crime rates decreased as well.
"Because we are being smarter about the way we work, these officers can really focus their time, rather than just running from call to call,” says Patrol Division Commander Capt. Scott Silverii of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office in the Government Technology article.
The agency is using Zuercher Technologies’ ledsSuite public safety software system to capture the crime and traffic statistics they use to direct personnel to key areas.
